Convo With Gxd

2020

Medium: Ink on original diary notebook paper, framed

Size: 8" x 10"

Description:
This drawing is derived from a diary entry by Lucas at Villa Matisse, during her six month stay in Tulum, Mexico, in 2021. The artist left NYC to explore Mexico for an artist residency during the Covid-19 pandemic, that forced civilians from all over the world to work from home- resulting in Lucas to have no excuse but to work remotely from anywhere in the world she could clear her head and use her time wisely. She decided she may as well hone her craft somewhere in nature, and learn about Mayan culture and how they created their own pigments as well as holistically maintained their physical, emotional and spiritual health.

This time abroad resulted in Lucas discovering new techniques of painting and drawing using her own pigment that she learned how to make from scratch. This process taught Lucas the importance of realizing the abundance of life and nature, and how in order to sustain a fruitful life of creativity and spirituality in her process, no matter the circumstances, one must learn how to utilize the natural elements surrounding them. Learning and practicing this resulted in a growth and awakening for Lucas as a spiritualist and philosopher, comparing her learnings from the Jewish religion's beliefs in trusting gxd to provide all needs and manifesting ideas just by noticing what splendor one already upholds. This made Lucas then question why so much heartache and suffering goes on in the world while the answers are right in front of us.

"....We never really know everything. Even when we think we may. Whatever though, we’re here for the journey. I bet the universal consciousness is saying “sheesh I gave you an abundance of beauty and resources to utilize and collaborate with me on creating more alongside what each and every one of your callings are. What is with all of the bickering and theft? Relax and appreciate what you have and leave others alone. Be happy to work together and love a bit more. Man.”
Personifying the "Universal Consciousness" is one of many ways Lucas often uses to imagine the great questions of life to be answered.

The reference photo used for this drawing is from a photo series the artist modeled for, shot by Photographer, Duncan Mellor. This drawing remains a one of a kind piece of Keli Lucas art history, ripped directly from the artist's notebook.
