Life Is Still Yummy

2020

Medium: Mixed Media

Size: 18" x 24"

Description:
One from a series of two still-life paintings the artist began in 2020 during the Covid 19 lockdown. This series began shortly after the artist joined her partners at Sustainable United Neighborhoods 501(c)3, in giving out free farmer's market goods to the residents of the Bushwick NYCHA Projects, where she became inspired by the charity, seeing food as life and giving life as a way to show love during a moment of collective fear. The series began with Lucas hand-painting a banner with fruits, vegetables and flowers. Following this banner, the artist found herself compelled to create more pieces inspired by the same idea, seeing nature as her subject rather than her usual portrait style of human subjects. Lucas expressed missing the outdoors after quarantining inside for so long, and saw these paintings as her happy place. A mixed-media piece, it consists of wall paint, aerosol, chalk and oil pastel with acrylic paint on canvas. Following its creation, the two sister works were exhibited in SOHO, Manhattan, at the NYC Art Movement gala in March 2021.
