Medium: Oil paint on hand-stretched and hand-primed canvas

Size: 30" x 40"

Description:
Created in 2012 while the artist was studying at School of Visual Arts in Chelsea, this painting was a figurative depiction from a live model as the artist studied figurative oil painting and drawing. After documenting the model with attention to the details of her facial features from the vantage point, her limbs and the change of pigmentation in her skin according to the range of light throughout the room and its reflection, she decided to create a fantasy scene to place her into. A warm, cavelike setting came to mind, filled with dripping liquids that layered onto slender mountains of rock and crystals, similar to the caves she visited from a previous trip to Yellowstone, Montana, that year. This piece remains one of the last of Lucas' realistic figurative paintings, as she soon graduated to more abstracted forms of depicting portraits and obsessing mores on the face and identity of her subjects.
